The article discusses Yorgos Sicilianos’ approach to art and composition, emphasizing his departure from the stereotype of artists isolated in their “ivory towers” creating art for art’s sake. Instead, Sicilianos was deeply engaged with social issues and the need to communicate with his contemporaries. His music is described as inherently social, appealing to a broad audience despite its infrequent performances. The article critiques those who adhere strictly to aesthetic theories that disconnect music from its communicative and expressive functions, arguing that Sicilianos’ works derive their significance from their engagement with contemporary issues and traditions.

Moreover, the article highlights Sicilianos’ belief that an artist needs roots in tradition to create meaningful art. This stance contrasts with the modernist tendency to break from the past. Sicilianos’ rootedness in tradition and his search for connections with cultural heritage are highlighted as recurring themes in his writings and compositions. He believed that without these roots, an artist would feel alienated and produce work lacking depth and historical and emotional connections. The article concludes that Sicilianos’ approach and his insistence on the importance of tradition set him apart from his contemporaries and reflect his unique perspective on the role of the artist in society.
