Violist

Corneel Gerard Maria (Gerard) Ruymen ( Antwerp , December 23, 1914 ) was a Belgian violist .

He was son of Josephus Catharina Michael Ruymen and Anna Ludovica Boden. He himself was married to pianist Frida Pey, with whom he also formed a musical duo, including a performance in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 1959. Son Patrick Ruymen became a violist and poet.

He received his training at conservatories in Naples , Royal Flemish Conservatory in Antwerp and the Royal Conservatory of Brussels . At the Antwerp Conservatory he obtained first prizes in viola (1934) and harmony (1836) and in Brussels he obtained a higher diploma in viola (1938). He was a violist in renowned Belgian symphony orchestras, such as the NIR (1936-1947), the Antwerp Philharmonic and the National Orchestra of Belgium (from 1952). He was also a chamber musician in the meantime; he was a participant in the Amsterdam string quartet (1947-1952, lived in the PC Hooftstraat between 1948 and 1950126) and Kölner Streichquartett (1951-1952), partly successor to the quartet in Amsterdam.

He was also an important pedagogue on the viola; From 1946 he was a teacher at the Flemish Conservatory and from 1977 also at the Brussels Conservatory. One of his students was Marc Tooten , a colleague was Victor Legley . In 1980 he retired and moved to Italy. He was best known for his performances of modern repertoire.

He left only a few recordings.
